Arthur Wakerley

We learnt a lot about our buildings when the refurbishment took place.  Arthur Wakerley was the architect responsible for designing this prominent building.  He was a politician and an active contributor to the newly forming and wealthy city of Leicester. He was the youngest Mayor and a great philanthropist.

Wakerley was absolutely committed to the development of communities for people and our buildings are one small part of the North Evington area, which he created.  Wakerley designed neighbourhoods with homes, of varying and interesting sizes, workshops and factories for employment, post offices for communication and the jewel in the crown – Spinney Hill Park.

We are proud still to carry Wakerley’s torch and to continue his most fervent of beliefs – that people should have places to meet, talk, celebrate and find one another – to be the kind of people we really want to be, communing and civilised.  His is a heritage we should never ignore, wherever we live.

We encourage visitors to see for themselves Wakerley’s work ‘from within’ and ask for a donation for the upkeep of the building when visiting.  An appointment must be made well in advance.
